Made-to-measure rugs: what to check before you order

A made-to-measure rug starts with the way you use the room. Choose the area it needs to cover, measure it, then confirm that your preferred design can be made in those dimensions. Before ordering, agree the finished size, construction, colour, price and making time in writing.

You do not need a complete interior scheme to begin. A room photograph, a rug you like and a few measurements are enough for a useful first conversation.

When is a custom size worth considering?

Consider it when the available sizes force a compromise: a sofa extends beyond the rug, dining chairs catch an edge, or a runner leaves an awkward gap. An alcove, bay window or long seating arrangement can also make a standard size difficult to place.

Custom does not automatically mean better. If an existing size fits your furniture and leaves comfortable circulation, it may be the right choice. Compare the layouts before choosing.

Measure the furniture arrangement, not just the room

Record the room width and length, then measure the furniture the rug will connect. Include the sofa and chairs for a sitting area, the table and pulled-out chairs for dining, or the bed frame and space where you step out in a bedroom.

Check doors, hearths, radiators and routes through the room. A rug can look balanced in a photograph while sitting exactly where a door needs to swing.

Use low-tack tape suitable for your floor to mark the proposed outline. Sit down, move the chairs and walk around it. Note whether the edges fall in useful places. This test is more informative than choosing a dimension from a room name alone.

Our rug size guide can help you explore a starting layout. Treat its recommendation as something to check in your own room.

Choose the design before asking for a final price

The same dimensions can have different prices in different constructions. A plain flatweave and a detailed hand-knotted design are not interchangeable specifications.

Select one or two rugs from the collection, then share the dimensions you are considering. Ask whether resizing changes the border, repeat or position of a central motif. For a runner or round version, also ask whether the design needs adapting.

Changing colour or material is a separate request from changing size. We confirm what is feasible for the particular rug.

What should the written confirmation include?

  • The rug name and agreed design or reference.
  • Finished width and length, or diameter, with the unit stated.
  • Fibre composition, construction and colourway.
  • Whether the dimensions include fringe, and the agreed size tolerance.
  • The confirmed total and payment details.
  • Making time and the separate delivery estimate.
  • Any sample or design approval needed before production.

At Monolith & Heart, the confirmed price includes taxes and duties, with free worldwide shipping. Check that your quote shows the agreed size and destination before paying.

How long does a made-to-measure rug take?

For our hand-knotted rugs, allow about 13–14 weeks for making as general guidance. Each knot is tied by hand. Other constructions often take about 4–6 weeks to make. We confirm the timing for your specific design and size; these are making estimates, not arrival dates.

Share your required delivery date at the start, especially if it relates to an installation. That lets us discuss the schedule before you commit.

Can I check the colour first?

Ask about sample options for the rug you have chosen. Availability, cost and timing need confirmation. A screen image is useful for narrowing the choice, but it cannot reproduce every fibre, texture or change of colour in your light.

Start with the details you already have

Choose a design and use its Custom size option, or ask us about a made-to-measure rug. Send the dimensions, your location and anything important about the room. If the size is still uncertain, say so. We can help you compare a small number of workable options before confirming an order.
