Dining room rug size: measure the table and pulled-out chairs

A dining room rug needs to accommodate the chairs when someone pulls them out to sit down. As a starting estimate, allow about 60–75 cm beyond each edge of the table, then test the actual chairs. Seat count alone cannot tell you the right rug size.

A table for six might be compact or unusually long. The chairs may also need very different amounts of space. Measure the setup you own.

Calculate a starting size

For a rectangular table, add twice your proposed clearance to both the width and the length. For example, a 100 × 220 cm table with 70 cm on each side suggests a 240 × 360 cm rug.

These examples are calculations, not promises that every table of that size will fit:

Table width × length Clearance on each side Starting rug width × length
90 × 160 cm 60 cm 210 × 280 cm
100 × 220 cm 70 cm 240 × 360 cm
110 × 260 cm 75 cm 260 × 410 cm

If you measure in inches, the same method applies. Adding 24 inches on each side means adding 48 inches to each table dimension. Do not add the clearance only once.

Test the chairs before choosing a final dimension

Tape out the proposed rug outline with tape suitable for your floor. Pull every chair out far enough for someone to sit and stand comfortably. Include the end chairs, which may be larger than the side chairs.

Check where the back legs land and how they move across the proposed edge. If they drop off it or catch it, try more clearance. A larger starting allowance can be helpful, but the chair test is the deciding step.

Leave room for the routes people use around the dining area. Check cupboard doors, a nearby sideboard and any doorway that opens towards the rug.

What about an extending table?

Measure it in the arrangement you need the rug to serve. If you extend it every weekend, include that length in the everyday layout. If you extend it only occasionally, decide whether the rug also needs to accommodate that setup.

A rug sized for the smaller arrangement may leave extended end chairs beyond its edge. That is a practical trade-off to consider before ordering, rather than a surprise to discover at dinner.

What size round rug goes under a round table?

Add twice the chair clearance to the table diameter. A 120 cm round table plus 70 cm on each side gives a starting rug diameter of 260 cm.

Check the complete chair movement, not only a chair directly in front of you. A rectangular rug can also work beneath a round table, particularly in a rectangular room. It still needs enough space for each chair when pulled out.

Round versions of a design need feasibility confirmation. Changing the shape can change its border and motif arrangement.

Which construction is easier to live with?

Look for a surface your chairs move across comfortably, and check the care instructions for the particular material. Lower pile or a flatweave may be worth comparing with a deeper pile, but neither label guarantees that a rug will suit your chairs or routine.

If spills are frequent, ask about cleaning before choosing. Wool, jute and blends need different care; natural fibre does not mean machine-washable. A suitable underlay should also be checked against both the rug and floor.

When standard sizes do not fit

Choose the nearest size only after checking that it gives enough chair clearance and fits the room. There is no advantage in automatically sizing up if the larger rug obstructs a door or reaches into another furniture zone.
