Buying a handmade rug online in Australia: what to check

Bracken handwoven wool rug by Monolith & Heart

A handmade rug is a considered purchase, especially when you are choosing it online. The safest way to buy is to check five things clearly: construction, material, dimensions, colour evidence and what happens if the rug arrives damaged or incorrect.

1. Check how the rug is made

“Handmade” describes several different constructions. Handwoven and flatweave rugs are built on a loom and tend to have a lower profile. Hand-tufted rugs can create a denser pile and sculpted surface. In a hand-knotted rug, every knot is tied by hand, row by row, which takes considerably longer and creates a different structure.

At Monolith & Heart, handwoven and hand-tufted rugs are generally made and delivered in about 4–6 weeks. Hand-knotted rugs are generally made and delivered in about 13–14 weeks. Confirm the timing shown on the individual rug before ordering.

2. Read the material, not only the colour

Wool, jute, hemp, viscose and recycled PET behave differently. Wool is resilient and comfortable underfoot. Jute and hemp give a firmer, textural surface. Viscose can add lustre but needs more careful placement and care. Recycled PET can suit practical areas, depending on the specific construction. Do not assume every rug is soft, washable or suitable for heavy use; read the published details for the individual design.

3. Confirm the size with furniture in place

Do not measure an empty room alone. Measure the sofa arrangement, bed or dining table as well. For dining rooms, allow about 60 cm beyond the table on each side so chairs remain on the rug when pulled out. For living rooms, aim to place at least the front legs of the main seating on the rug. Use our rug size guide if you want to compare the proportions visually.

4. Judge colour from more than one screen

Screen settings and room light can change how a colour appears. Look at every product photograph, including closer texture views, and read the listed colour and material. If the exact tone is important to the room, ask us about a colour sample before ordering.

5. Read the price and delivery terms

Australian visitors see prices in AUD. Monolith & Heart includes taxes and duties in the displayed price and provides free worldwide shipping, so there should not be a separate import bill from us on delivery.

If something is wrong on arrival

Every rug is made for the order, so change-of-mind returns are not available. If a rug arrives damaged, faulty or differs from the confirmed order, contact us with photographs and the order details. We will arrange the return and offer a replacement or refund, whichever you prefer.
